WINNIPEG – It says “Friendly Manitoba” on our licence plates and for yet another year, a study shows it’s true.
For the 16th year, Manitobans have topped a list of most charitable donors.
The Fraser Institute released its annual generosity index, which looks at how many Canadians donate to registered charities, based on their income tax filings from 2012.
Manitoba was the most generous province, both in the number that donate (25 per cent) and the amount donated (0.84 per cent of income).

The study also found the average charitable donation in the province is $1,699.
However, the think-tank said charitable giving is on the decline in Canada and Canadians are lagging behind the U.S.
When the overall generosity index for North America is looked at, Utah was in the top spot. Manitoba fell far behind at 37th.
