Health minister calls alleged senior assault case at Regina facility ‘horrific’

REGINA – Saskatchewan’s Health minister says the alleged assault of a nursing home resident is prompting him to meet with the facility’s board of directors to decide on a course of action.

His comments come after employees at the Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home in Regina were suspended due to allegations of assault and neglect.

Dustin Duncan says he learned of the alleged assault on Friday and was appalled.

Video of the alleged incident and other details have since been provided to Regina police for a criminal investigation.

He adds that he hasn’t seen the video but says the description of what takes place is “horrific.”

He says there may be additional inquiries into senior care at the home or changes in its administration.

The Santa Maria home has been at the centre of debate on provincial care standards for the last few weeks after the death of a resident was brought forward in a separate case involving alleged neglect.
