HALIFAX – A veteran educator and superintendent has been appointed to help improve governance and accountability at Nova Scotia’s Tri-County Regional School Board.
Education Minister Karen Casey says Jim Gunn will spend six months with the board that serves Digby, Yarmouth and Shelburne counties in order to address problems highlighted in an audit released this week by provincial auditor general Michael Pickup.
Pickup said the board is not addressing poor student achievement, especially in math and reading and has not ensured that school officials are held accountable for the delivery of improved performance by students.
Casey says Gunn will meet with her on a monthly basis to provide progress updates.
Gunn spent 14 years as superintendent in the Annapolis Valley region and also served as interim superintendent at the South Shore board in 2006 and 2013 and at the Tri-County board in 2011.
Casey says her department is finalizing the terms and conditions of Gunn’s work.
