Pointe-Claire residents frustrated over Alston Avenue rush hour traffic mess

POINTE-CLAIRE — Driving down most residential roads in the West Island is generally a relaxing, uneventful experience, until you hit Alston Avenue during rush hour.

The volume of cars, trucks and buses is staggering.

People living on the street have a hard time just crossing it, let alone pulling their cars out of their driveways.

In fact, Global News witnessed a minor accident involving a parked truck on the side of the road and an SUV.

Now residents are saying enough is enough.

Many living on the busy road are demanding the police or the city do something to reduce the vehicle volume and crack down on traffic violators.

The city has estimated more than 2,400 vehicles travel on the road everyday.

Some are calling for speed bumps to be installed, or posting new signs that prohibit drivers from turning onto the avenue from the A40 service road or even changing Alston Avenue into a one-way street.

The city’s traffic department has confirmed it’s looking into the problem, but for now it said it is only committed to starting a public awareness campaign to encourage people to respect the rules of the road.

But that’s not good enough for residents on Alston Avenue.

They’ve now started a petition demanding more be done.
