WINNIPEG – Mayor Brian Bowman thinks city politicians make enough money, and so tomorrow will present a motion to the executive policy committee (EPC) that would see severance payments to councillors cut.

“Most Winnipegers, when they choose to leave a job, when they choose to quit, don’t get tens of thousands of dollars as a payout,” said Bowman.

The mayor is also proposing to reduce top-ups given to committee chairs and members of EPC.  Anyone who sits on EPC currently gets an additional $30,000, on top of their annual salary of $85,000.

Bowman wants to reduce that by 50 percent.

The mayor says either way he will be reducing his own salary by about $12,000 and will not be taking a severance.

Some former councillors have previously argued the severance is a necessary incentive to encourage citizens to enter politics.
