Blanket of snow covers Winnipeg

WINNIPEG – Most of Manitoba woke up to the first significant winter snowfall Saturday morning.

About two to four centimeters of snow accumulated in Winnipeg.

City crews started clearing and sanding streets at midnight. The operations will continue throughout the day, first clearing major streets and then moving on to collector bus routes.

Snow disposal sites are currently open and available for public use.

Drifting snow will fall throughout the afternoon. According to Environment Canada, temperatures could to fall to -18 Saturday, feeling like -25 with windchill.

Saturday night is expected to be mainly cloudy and there is a chance of flurries. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to -22 and with windchill -32.

The City plans to have all of the snow clearing completed by Monday if the weather stays clear and cold.
