CALGARY – Alberta Health Services says a patient being treated for an unknown illness at a Calgary hospital does not have Ebola.

The patient, a woman in her 30s, showed symptoms of a contagious illness when at the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) on Wednesday night. Due to her travel and symptom history, AHS decided to test her for the potentially deadly virus.

She was transported to the South Health Campus, one of four hospitals in Alberta designated to handle Ebola patients.

“Staff managed this patient appropriately, implementing the protective protocols necessary,” said a news release. “Although the test results have now confirmed that the patient did not have Ebola, the protocols in place were necessary to ensure that health was protected from any potential risk.”

Health officials are assuring the public that the South Health Campus is safe and presents no risk to patients or staff.

It’s unknown what illness the patient is in fact suffering from, but officials say no further information will be released due to patient confidentiality.
