More students, more money: District 51 updates budget

Lethbridge School District 51 is growing like never before.

School officials say enrolment is up three percent which equals 271 extra students in the system.

“This is one of the better years, absolutely. [It’s] the most growth we’ve seen in one year in our school district for student enrolment,” said Christine Lee, Director of Finances.

More students means more money for the system. An extra 3.8 million dollars will now be coming in from Alberta Education and money for things like infrastructure has nearly doubled.

With more kids filling the classrooms, more teachers are being hired. The district has added 12.5 teaching positions and 18 support staff.

“Overall, we’ve added 44 additional staff which includes teachers and support staff compared to last year,” said Lee.

Three years ago, provincial cuts forced the district to eliminate roughly 30 full time teaching and support staff.

With over 900 full time employees, the school district is the sixth largest employer in Lethbridge.
