Overturned semi blocks Highway 33

JOE RICH, BC — It was slow-going on Highway 33 at the Eight Mile hairpin just outside of Kelowna, after a semi overturned late Monday night.

The semi (a wood chip truck) was headed toward Kelowna when it failed to negotiate a right-hand turn.

It appears the truck bounced off the concrete barriers before overturning onto its side – spilling its load on the highway.

“A westbound tractor-trailer came into the corner, slid across the oncoming lane before impacting the concrete barrier. The truck rode the barrier for about 100 m before stopping, overturned. The driver and sole occupant suffered no overt injuries but did have some soreness,” says Constable Kris Clark with Kelowna RCMP.

Road crews spent the night clearing the spilled wood chips and righting the vehicle.

The highway re-opened at around 7 a.m. today.

“The file does not indicate any charges,” says Clark.

Speeds on Highway 33 have been a growing concern to some Joe Rich residents.

They recently held a meeting with the Ministry of Highways expressing their concern about the recent increase in the speed limit from 90 km/hr to 100 km/hr.

The Ministry of Highways says it increased the speed limit based on extensive research, which showed the average speed on Highway 33 through Joe Rich is 101 km/hr.

The residents say they want it lowered to the original 90 km/hr.
