TORONTO – The premier of New Brunswick says stipulations for the Ontario government’s support of the proposed Energy East Pipeline are reasonable and achievable.
Brian Gallant met with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne Monday in Toronto to show his support for the $12-billion project, which would see western crude sent by pipeline to refineries in Eastern Canada and a proposed export terminal in Saint John, N.B.
Wynne and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said last week that greenhouse gas emissions must be considered in the development of the project.
Wynne also wants assurances there will be consultations with First Nations and other communities in the path of the pipeline.
Gallant says the project can be done in a secure way and benefit provinces across the country.
TransCanada (TSX:TRP), the company proposing to build the pipeline, filed an application to the National Energy Board last month.
The chairman of the National Energy Board says climate change policy is not within its purview and it doesn’t intend for its hearings to become bogged down in that debate.
