YORKTON, Sask. – A Saskatchewan Party candidate in the Nov. 7 election has apologized for a remark he made during a forum in Yorkton earlier this week.
Greg Ottenbreit says he was responding to a question about resource revenue-sharing with First Nations.
He says in a release that he can’t remember what his exact words were.
But he says they were along the line of being told by First Nations that easy handouts can be used for alcohol and drugs.
Ottenbreit says his words were poorly chosen and he asks anyone who was offended to forgive him.
He says drugs and alcohol are a challenge in every community and not specific to First Nations.
Revenue-sharing has been an issue in the election campaign. The New Democrats have said they would share with aboriginal groups, but the governing Sask. Party says that would cost $1.6 billion and help put the province in a deficit.
