‘People need to stay off the roads’: Lac La Biche RCMP after fatal collision

Watch above: Treacherous winter driving conditions led RCMP to issue a no travel advisory for areas of northern Alberta Saturday.

EDMONTON — RCMP in northern Alberta are warning drivers to stay off the roads after a fatal collision in the area Saturday. A no travel advisory has been put in place and is expected to remain in effect until late Saturday night.

The collision happened on Highway 881 at kilometre marker 162 near Conklin. Cpl. Sarah Knelsen with RCMP ‘K’ Division says the collision involved a tanker truck, logging truck and a pick-up truck.

One woman was killed in the collision, her identity is not known at this time. Two other people, one from each vehicle, were injured in the collision. One person was airlifted from the scene in serious condition.

“The number one imperative thing that people need to take out of this is all of our highways — Highway 881, Highway 36, Highway 55, Highway 663 and Highway 858 — all in Lac La Biche County are all in treacherous driving conditions,” said Cst. Chris Clark with Lac La Biche RCMP.

“People need to stay off the roads and they need to change their plans. They should stay at home and that should be it for today.”

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for much of central and northern Alberta Saturday. Snow, ice and strong winds have created very slick and dangerous road conditions.
