Get the shovels ready: snow coming this weekend

EDMONTON –  Much of central and northern Alberta could see a significant snowfall this weekend.

“This system is forecast to bring five to 10 centimetres of snow to central Alberta,” said Global Edmonton’s chief meteorologist Nicola Crosbie.

More snow is predicted further north.

On Friday morning, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement: an alert to let people know that “conditions are unusual and could cause concern.” That statement, which was in effect for north and central Alberta, has since been lifted.

It has been replaced with a snowfall warning for parts of northeastern Alberta. As the system develops, Environment Canada says the warning may extend southeast.

Clearer conditions should return by Sunday afternoon, according to Crosbie.

“The benefit is these systems move quickly and usually do not bring record accumulations to the area.”

Motorists are reminded to drive to the conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
