EDMONTON – Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning Thursday morning for a large section of Northern Alberta, as a low pressure system moved from British Columbia into northwest Alberta.
Environment Canada said a band of freezing rain developed in the Grande Prairie region Thursday morning and was expected to move into Fort McMurray by the afternoon.
“This type of front brings warmer air to the mid-levels of the atmosphere, but conditions are still below freezing at the surface. This can produce freezing rain,” explained Global Edmonton meteorologist Nicola Crosbie. The warning was expected to end in the area by the evening as it moves into Saskatchewan.
Crosbie added rain was expected for Edmonton on Thursday, with the high climbing to four degrees Celsius. About three centimetres of snow is expected for the city on Saturday.
“It’s quite typical of November to have rising and falling temperatures all different times of the day. Quite often, the daytime high will be reached overnight.”
