WINNIPEG – A brazen thief reached behind the counter in a Winnipeg jewelry store and made off with thousands of dollars in merchandise, and the only one watching was the security camera.
The thief posed as a customer at Golden Hand Jewellery on Main Street Saturday, pretending he was looking for a ring for his girlfriend.
While the store owner’s attention was directed elsewhere, the “customer” reached behind the counter, flipped open the door and grabbed a couple of items. He stuck them in his pocket and then coolly told the store owner he was no longer interested in making a purchase and asked to be let out of the store’s locked security door.
The whole thing was recorded on the store’s security cameras.
The thief made off with two rings worth a total of $10,000, said Paul Szurlej, who owns the store.
“It made me pretty sick that this happened while I was standing 10 feet away,” Szurlej said. “He was very calm about it, like, ‘Thank you, see you again,’ and he walked out the door.”
Szurleg said he forgot to lock the display case before leaving the “customer” to browse.
