After 12 years, Wayne Wright’s reign in New Westminster has come to an end.

Jonathan X. Cote, a city councillor since 2005, was elected mayor on Saturday, defeating four-term mayor Wright and two other challengers.

With all stations counted, Cote received 7661 votes, compared to 5149 for Wright, 1345 for James Crosty, and 315 for Vladimir Krasnogor.

Cote, who at 35 becomes the youngest mayor in Metro Vancouver, received the backing of many New Westminster councillors, as well as the New Westminster Labour council.
