UPDATE: 3 dead, 2 injured in head-on collision near Rocky Mountain House

CALGARY — Three people were killed in a head-on crash between two pick-up trucks Tuesday morning.

RCMP were called to the scene northeast of Rocky Mountain House on Highway 12 near Range Road 55 around 7:15 a.m.

Investigators believe a westbound red pick-up, which was carrying two men, lost control on the ice and struck a white eastbound truck with three men inside.

The two men in the red pick-up truck were killed in the crash, as was the driver of the white truck. The two passengers who were in the white truck were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

According to RCMP, the road conditions were “extremely treacherous” at the time, due to recent snow fall, cold temperatures and wind gusts.

“It appears that the road was very slick,” said Cst. Matthew Doane of Rocky Mountain House RCMP.

“It doesn’t appear that speed or alcohol was a factor in this.”

No names have been released.
