Fundraiser held for Hungarian family facing deportation

VIDEO: Global News reporter Asa Rehman reports on the fundraising game in Abbotsford Friday night

It could be the last weekend in Canada for a Hungarian family facing deportation.

The Juhasz family of Abbotsford fled Hungary four years ago, escaping domestic violence.

Their application to stay has been denied,  and the courts will decide Monday if the family has to go back to Hungary. They could be deported by Wednesday.

Patrik Juhasz’s football team organized a fundraiser Friday night to help pay any costs that the family may now face.

Patrik’s brother, Tamas, says everyone is upset about the situation.

“All my friends today were crying, everyone was sad, my teachers were crying when they said goodbye,” says Tamas.

“I love seeing everyone here in support of Patrick, because we take care of our own,” says their football coach Jay Fujimura.

Funds raised tonight, and in a GoFundMe campaign, will go to the Juhasz’s legal costs.
