In photos: The Berlin Wall, before and after

Thousands of young East Berliners crowd atop the Berlin Wall, near the Brandenburg Gate (background) on November 11, 1989. Two days before, Gunter Schabowski, the East Berlin Communist party boss, declared that starting from midnight, East Germans would be free to leave the country, without permission, at any point along the border, including the crossing-points through the Wall in Berlin. The Berlin Wall fell 25 years ago on November 9, 1989. Now, there are few traces of the Wall left in the city.

So few, in fact, that I was shocked to find out that the Wall once ran over a bridge in Berlin, where I danced until dawn last summer in a nightclub below, then walked home along the bridge.
