Blizzard warning as cold front blows into Manitoba

WINNIPEG – Northern Manitoba is under a weather warning as a cold front brings miserable weather into the province Friday.

Much of northern Manitoba is under a blizzard warning as a storm is expected to settle in near noon in Tadoule Lake and later in the afternoon in the Churchill and York regions.

“Conditions will quickly deteriorate as winds strengthen to northwest 60 gusting to 80 kilometres per hour,” the warning from Environment Canada says.

Poor visibility in snow and blowing snow and rapidly dropping temperatures will be features of the storm, which is expect to let off over night.

“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility,” the warning says. “Limit outdoor activities.”

The Pas, Wanless, Westray, Clearwater Lake Provincial Park, Swan River, Duck Mountain, Porcupine Provincial Forest and Grand Rapids were under freezing rain warnings earlier Friday, but it was cancelled just before 10:30 a.m.

The Winnipeg forecast is for showers ending early this morning then resuming near noon. The wind was forecast to blow from the northwest at 50 km/h gusting to 70 km/h in the afternoon.. The high is expected to hit 7 C.
