Bombers announce season ticket hike, return of beer snake

WINNIPEG — The controversial beer snake that lived a short life at Canad Inns Stadium will slither into the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ new home next season.

The CFL team announced Tuesday that it will allow fans to stack empty, plastic beer cups together to form a chain that resembles a snake in a new section starting in 2015. The area will be located in sections 140 and 141 of Investors Group Field. It will be called the Fanatic Fan Zone and will mimic the popular “Section S” at the Bombers’ old Polo Park Stadium. Season tickets in this newly formed area will cost $338.50.

“We are always listening to our fans,” said Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller. “They’ve told us they want a place where they can stand on their feet all game, wear their craziest Bomber gear and cheer at top volume from the opening whistle until the final snap. We created this area so these fans can enjoy the game in their unique way without disturbing some of our more traditional fans.”

The beer snake was banned by the Bombers in 2010 due to safety concerns.

“Some (fans) had younger children sitting with them,” said former Bombers president Jim Bell four years ago. “When the shower of cups came down, we know for a fact that some people where hit with them.”

The news of the beer snake’s return comes on the same day the football club revealed an average season ticket price increase of 2.11 per cent. That jump equals from $0.50 to $2.05 extra per game. Bomber fans who hold P5 season tickets will see no increase.

“The increases are necessary due to increasing operating costs of the club,” said Miller. “Most notably in football and facility operations.”

The Bombers will reconfigure eight sections in Investors Group Field next year. Season ticket holders who find their seats in a new price section will continue to be charged prices from their original pricing category for as long as they own the seats.

Fans who commit to a three-year season ticket membership will receive a $100 discount on each ticket they purchase for the 2015 Grey Cup, which will be hosted by Winnipeg. Season ticket holders will also get the first chance to buy tickets to next year’s CFL championship game. The commitment deadline for the 2015 season is Dec. 15.
