Global/Ipsos poll shows NDP support still strong in Quebec

Global/Ipsos poll shows NDP support still strong in Quebec - image

Our latest Global Montreal exclusive poll shows the NDP is as popular now as it was in the last election, even after the loss of Jack Layton.

Jack Layton was the man who catapulted the NDP to historic heights, but with his death, many believed the party would lose its luster in Quebec. Instead the survey shows the NDP is as strong as ever.

“What we’re seeing now in terms of continued support, we had 9 out of 10 people who voted NDP in the last election would continue to vote NDP again today,” says it’s a very strong result and it tells us in that last election, clearly a big part of the equation was Jack Layton and what he brought to the table, there’s something more to it than that.

The poll was conducted by Ipsos Decarie for Global Montreal. It shows a whopping 90 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for the NDP again if the leader they were backing won the leadership race.

If their leader didn’t win, 72 percent would still vote NDP. Only 12 percent would turn back to the Bloc.

The NDP, it seems, is finding its own identity in Quebec

“Obviously another dynamic is at work and as time goes by, the NDP members from Quebec will start revealing who they are and people will get to know them,” says Will Straw of the McGill Institute for the study of Canada.

“They see us in the house of commons asking questions. They see us on the street in the riding meeting groups, associations, talking to merchants,” explains Rosemont La Petit-Patrie MP Alexandre Boulerice, “We are really present, we are rising the questions we are pushing the Conservatives.”

Thomas Mulcair is expected to officially join the race tomorrow. Here in Quebec 40 percent support Thomas Mulcair as the next leader of the NDP compared to only 7 percent for Brian Topp, 49 percent are still undecided.

the finish line is a long way away, the convention isn’t scheduled to the end of March.
