The 10 closest ridings in the 2007 Saskatchewan provincial election

Moose Jaw North

The closest race in the 2007 election was Moose Jaw North, where the Sask Party’s Warren Michelson defeated incumbent Glenn Hagel of the NDP by 33 votes. Hagel had held the riding since first being elected in 1986 and was later elected mayor of Moose Jaw in 2009.

Meadow Lake

The riding of Meadow Lake was originally won by NDP incumbent Maynard Sonntang but Jeremy Harrison of the Sask Party was declared the winner after a counting error was found the day after the election and the count of absentee ballots on November 19, 2007 confirmed Harrison’s victory by 36 votes.

Prince Albert Carlton

In another close race, the Sask Party’s Darryl Hickie defeated the NDP’s Chad Nilson by 61 votes. The incumbent in the riding, Myron Kowalsky of the NDP, did not run after serving as MLA for the riding since 1986

Laura Ross of the Sask Party defeated NDP incumbent Mark Wartman by 204 votes. Wartman had represented the riding since 1999 while Ross came up short in 2003 against the NDP’s Harry Van Mulligan in Regina Douglas Park.

Regina South

This could be a riding to watch in 2011 after the Sask Party’s Bill Hutchison narrowly defeated Yens Pedersen of the NDP by 255 votes. Hutchison and Pedersen are squaring off again in this year’s election.

Saskatoon Sutherland

Joceline Schriemer of the Sask Party defeated Graham Addley of the NDP by 269 votes. In the 2003 election, the NDP won the seat by 1,564 votes.

Saskatoon Meewasin

In 2007, incumbent Frank Quennell of the NDP beat out the Sask Party’s Roger Parent by 299 votes. This should be another riding to watch in 2011. In the last election, former Liberal leader David Karwacki came in a strong third, losing by 456 votes to Quennell and trailing Parent by 150 votes and where those votes go could decide the riding.

Saskatoon Greystone

Rob Norris of the Sask Party garnered 4,030 votes to defeat the NDP’s Andrew Mason by 308 votes. This is also a riding to watch in 2011 as the previous incumbent, the NDP’s Peter Prebble, is again running for election.

Saskatoon Eastview

Incumbent Judy Junor of the NDP squeaked out a win over the Sask Party’s Terry Alm by 310 votes. Junor has held the riding since first being elected in a by-election in 1990 and is running again this election.

The Battlefords

This could be an interesting race in 2011 after the NDP’s Len Taylor defeated Herb Cox of the Sask Party by 312 votes. Both are running again this year in the riding, along with current Liberal leader Ryan Bater.
