HALIFAX – Halifax police arrested a man Wednesday afternoon following a break-in — but not before he tried to escape in a canoe.
Officers were called about a break-and-enter on Cedarbank Terrace at 2:40 p.m. and given information that the suspect was fleeing the scene in a red canoe.
The police set up on both sides of the Northwest Arm so they could track the 20-year-old man. He eventually got to land and was arrested in Sir Sandford Fleming Park shortly after 3:30 p.m.
Police recovered the canoe along with items they believe were stolen in the break-in.
It is not yet known if the canoe was stolen.
The man is in custody and police say they are still investigating. He’s facing two counts of break and enter, and one charge each of resisting arrest, possession of housebreaking tools, and theft and possession under $5,000.
