HALIFAX – As news of a shooting at the National War Memorial and shots fired on Parliament Hill in Ottawa spread Wednesday, military bases in the Maritimes were on high alert.
At one point, a gate at CFB Halifax on Gottingen Street was chained shut, and another at the navy dockyard was closed to traffic.

A spokesman for CFB Halifax confirmed there was “increased vigilance at all Canadian Forces Bases.”
In a statement, Acting Sub-Lieutenant Jamie Tobin from Maritime Forces Atlantic Public Affairs said the safety of personnel was a top priority.
“Following the incident at the National War Memorial and parliament hill this morning, CFB Halifax has adapted its security posture,” it said.
“For reasons of operational security we do not discuss specific security measures that are in place to ensure the safety and security of our personnel.”
A memo was also sent out on behalf of Rear Admiral John Newton, the Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic and Joint Task Force Atlantic.
It advised personnel to remain in their buildings and to restrict being in public in uniform as much as possible.
Global News has learned a similar directive was sent to members of the Cadets.
Parents of Cadets, who are aged 12-18, were advised not to have their children wear their uniforms unless they were at a meeting on a military base.
