TORONTO – Ontario’s ombudsman will release a report today on his investigation into unlicensed daycares that was launched following the death of a toddler.

Andre Marin says the report will contain findings and recommendations relating to how the Ministry of Education responds to complaints and concerns about unlicensed daycare providers.

Marin launched the probe in July 2013 following the death of a two-year-old girl at a home daycare in Vaughan, north of Toronto.

The New Democrats had called on Marin to launch the investigation, saying other children had died in unlicensed daycares, including a toddler found at the bottom of a pool in 2010.

Education officials admitted that they failed to follow up on two of three complaints lodged against the Vaughan daycare.

Two Education Ministry employees were suspended after it was discovered that a number of complaints about unlicensed daycares went unanswered in 2012.
