REGINA – Police in Saskatchewan were busy in September making sure drivers obey the law behind the wheel.
Across the province police issued a total of 760 tickets to people speeding in school zones during a traffic safety spotlight in September.
Speeding in school zones results in a fine of at least $190 and three demerit points.
Police also issued over 1200 speeding tickets, 160 tickets for cellphone use while driving, and 71 impaired driving tickets in September.
Police did a two-day STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) blitz in Melfort on September 17th and 18th where they issued a total of 156 tickets including:
- 77 tickets for improper or non-seatbelt use
- 27 tickets for aggressive driving/speeding
- 13 tickets for cellphone use while driving
- 3 tickets for speeding in a school zone
- 36 other tickets
SGI car seat technicians also participated in the STEP event and they checked 84 child restraints during the stops and gave away nine car booster seats.
