‘We have the capacity’: Alberta health official on flu vaccination program

WATCH ABOVE: Immunization clinics are now open across Alberta. As Tom Vernon reports, health officials hope to see a big jump in the number of people getting the shot.

EDMONTON – Alberta health officials are certain they have enough resources to provide all Albertans who want a flu shot with one in an efficient manner this year.

This year, officials would like to see 45 per cent of Albertans be immunized against influenza. Last year, the immunization rate was about 27 per cent.

Experts say the higher the immunization rate, the lower the mortality rate from the flu. For instance, if the immunization rate was 50 per cent, the mortality rate for the flu would be less than 10 per cent.

In 2013, more than 1,200 Albertans were hospitalized with the flu. There were 30 deaths.

However, last flu season, Albertans reported long lines at flu clinics. This time around, officials say they are more prepared.

“We believe that we have the capacity,” said Dr. James Talbot, chief medical officer of health.

“Alberta Health Services has done a wonderful job, as have physicians and pharmacists, on being able to ramp up.

This year, officials would like to see the percentage of health care workers who are immunized reach about 80 per cent. In 2013, it was 55 per cent.

According to AHS, influenza immunization is the single most effective means of protection against the strains of influenza virus expected to circulate this season.
