Advance voting turnout for Toronto’s municipal election was highest in the city’s wealthy midtown neighbourhoods and Etobicoke north of the Gardiner Expressway, city data released Wednesday shows.

The advance poll, which started Tuesday, saw 28,046 people cast ballots on its first day – a record-breaking total. In one day, that exceeded total weekday turnout in the 2010 advanced voting, which was about 16,000 over six weekdays. That spike may signal higher turnout on October 27.

The pattern roughly mirrors Toronto’s income map, with a high-income core running up Yonge St. and lower-income, lower-advance-turnout neighbourhoods lining the CN railway line stretching northwest through the city’s west end.

It also appears to bode well for mayoral candidate John Tory, who’s been leading in many recent polls. (It may also be good news for Doug Ford, depending how much of his brother’s support he’s maintained in Etobicoke and North York)
