4 cars have become stuck on UBC stairs in only 10 days

WATCH: Over the past two weeks, several cars have taken wrong turns at UBC and ended up stuck on a staircase. Tanya Beja has more on what might be behind the confusion – and the steps being taken to increase safety for everyone.

VANCOUVER – If you are a student at UBC’s Point Grey campus you may want to be more alert while walking around school.

For the fourth time since Oct. 5, a vehicle became stuck on the stairs after taking a wrong turn on a pedestrian path.

Three vehicles, including a taxi, were stuck on steps located by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. This morning, another cab stumbled upon a staircase near Totem Park residence.

The staircase by the Learning Centre is tough to spot from inside a vehicle, and ongoing construction in the area isn’t helping.

“In this particular staircase, we’re working on active construction site,” says UBC Director of Planning Joe Stott. There are controls and there’s signage and traffic officers. But on weekends they’re not there, so someone who takes a wrong turn and gets lost can be disoriented.”

On Wednesday, UBC crews installed barriers to prevent this kind of incident from happening again. The Alma Mater Society also posted a sign at the top of the stairs warning drivers.
