Fall wine fest kicks off

The Fall Okanagan Wine Festival officially kicked off Thursday night in downtown Kelowna.

More than 200 guests were on hand for the B.C. Wine Awards to launch the 10-day event.

Nine international judges tasted more than 450 wines before awarding top honours to several different wineries.

The best white wine was awarded to Summerhill Pyramid Winery for its 2010 Riesling.

The 2009 Reserve Syrah from Red Rooster Winery was awarded the best red wine.

The best dessert wine was given to the 2009 Proprietors’ Grand Reserve Riesling Icewine from Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Estate.

And the Volcanic Hills Estate Winery was named best new winery.
