Penticton couple escapes burning home

PENTICTON – A Penticton couple is in the care of Emergency Social Services after their rental home was destroyed by fire.

Flames at the Norton Street house near the city’s downtown core broke out around 8:40 p.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Dave Spalding says the fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread to the attic.

Spalding says the tenants, a man and a woman, were cooking french fries at the time.

He says a pot of oil may have been left temporarily unattended on the stove.

The couple managed to flee the home unharmed.

Four pets, two cats and two dogs, were also inside when flames broke out.

One of the dogs was initially trapped by smoke and heat in the basement but was eventually rescued by fire fighters.

Fire investigators are now trying to determine an exact cause.

The tenants did not have contents insurance.

The owner did have house insurance.
