Saskatoon police look into woman’s death in RCMP custody

SASKATOON – The Saskatoon Police Service is investigating an in-custody death that occurred in northern Saskatchewan at an RCMP station earlier this week.

Around 7:50 p.m. on Monday, a 39-year-old woman became unresponsive in the cell area at the Sandy Bay RCMP detachment.

Medical assistance was obtained from a local health centre; however, the Sandy Bay Sask. woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not been released.

RCMP have requested Saskatoon police’s major crime unit conduct an independent external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sudden death.

Saskatoon police will submit their findings to the ministry of justice and the attorney general.
