While the young boy suffered from serious head injuries, the driver, a 33-year-old woman, was treated for shock, and the other passenger, an eight-year-old girl, suffered only minor injuries.

Authorities could not confirm why the child was so seriously hurt, and would not say whether there were car seats in the vehicle.

Investigators are checking to see if there was a technical issue with the SUV. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
