Midget football team to play out season after Hail Mary

WINNIPEG – In a last-minute decision, the president of the North Winnipeg Nomads will step in as head coach of the midget football team.

The team was left without its entire coaching and training staff after they were suspended in response to a player shoving a referee.

The incident happened on Oct. 3 in the team’s match against the Greendell Falcons. The league decided Monday to suspend the coaching staff and the player, meaning the team couldn’t play on.

“The meeting was very passionate. The young men know they’ve been given a second chance,” Nomads president Jeffrey Bannon told Global News. After an impassioned plea by the players, it was decided Bannon would step in as head coach.

The response to the suspensions was so overwhelming Bannon is turning away volunteers to step in to help coach, he said.
