The ‘Impressive’ Fire Ant is now invading B.C.’s Lower Mainland

VANCOUVER – Earlier this summer Global News reported about a new and painful pest invading Lower Mainland gardens.

Now it appears there is an even newer species of stinging fire ants causing concern.

This new species is being found all over the Lower Mainland, with just one of the areas being the Arbutus corridor.

These ants are similar to the European Fire Ants that have made major inroads over the past few years, except this new species flies.

Unfortunately there isn’t a good way to control these pests right now.

“The species now that’s been discovered in the region, now they’re referring to as the Impressive Fire Ant,” said Jennifer Grenz from the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver. “This one the queens do fly, which means they have a much greater opportunity to spread quite a bit more widely than the European Fire Ant, which would just kind of march along and often has been stopped by things like roadways but this allows them to expand their range much more.”

“Certainly that’s what we’ve been finding is that this is everywhere.”
