The sawmill where a former employee shot four men, killing two of them, will close permanently by the end of the year.
Western Forest Products announced Monday that they are consolidating their Nanaimo-area operations at their Duke Point and Saltair sawmills.
Employees at the Nanaimo sawmill will be offered employment at the company’s other mills, and also severence.
“The investments being made at Duke Point and the consolidation of our Nanaimo sawmill operations are expected to reduce costs, improve our flexibility to produce different grades of lumber, and increase our recovery factors from log to lumber,” said Don Demens, Western Forest Products President and CEO in a news release.
The sawmill near downtown Nanaimo opened in 1980 and employs 60 people.
