WINNIPEG – Moms and babies from across the province crowded the Manitoba Legislature building to “latch-on” and challenge the world breastfeeding record Saturday.
The moms were celebrating the benefits of breastfeeding and breast milk in light of World Breastfeeding Week in Canada, which wraps up this weekend.
“We want people to be aware that this is really important and that moms need to be comfortable to feed wherever they need to because you have to do it all the time,” said Carolyn Perchuk, one of the Winnipeg event organizers.
The Legislature building was one of over 100 sites that latched on in one place at the same time, trying to having the highest number of children breastfeeding in one location. The breastfeeding competition was initiated by the Quintessence Foundation in British Columbia and has since been followed by cities around the world.
“It’s a great bond, we love the closeness it brings for us and it’s hugely nutritional and beneficial to the kids,” said Corrie Van Aertselaer, one of the moms at the event.
