WATCH: Will national park talks resume?

OSOYOOS, BC — It’s a move that may reignite discussions on a proposed national park in the South Okanagan-Similkameen.

The park needs approval from the B.C. government, and the B.C. Liberals have already withdrew support.

But Osoyoos Mayor Stu Wells took the issue to the Union of B.C. Municipalities last week and received support for reexamining the idea.

“Basically,  what we were doing was asking the province to re-engage with Parks Canada,” says Wells.

This is not welcomed news for those who are vocally opposed to a national park.

Greg Norton with the Grassland and Park Review Coalition says the park would infringe on those who already use the area for recreational activities.

“I am definitely against a national park. I don’t think that Parks Canada is a community-based organization at all. I also don’t believe we need it to protect the integrity of this area,” adds Norton.

Mayor Wells explains that all he wants is dialogue, whether someone is pro or anti-park.

“Let’s work it through until the end. You can’t stop a process halfway through, it’s just not fair,” he says.
