WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Bisons’ football team will be without one of its standouts for the rest of the season.

Defensive lineman Evan Gill told Global News that he will miss the remainder of the year with a torn ACL in his right knee. The fourth year Bison suffered the injury during the first half of Friday’s 42-41 loss to the Calgary Dinos.

“He’s not just arguably the best defensive lineman in the nation but one of the best football players in the nation,” said Bisons head coach Brian Dobie. “No question, it’s impactful. We’re not only losing a really good football player but it’s also an emotional impact. He’s highly respected.”

Gill was selected ninth overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in this year’s CFL draft. His play has also drawn interested from south of the border. A scout with the Green Bay Packers made the trip to Winnipeg last week to take a closer look at the Churchill High School alumnus.

It’s expected backup defensive lineman Kent Hicks will take over Gill’s starting role.

“He played very well in Calgary,” said Dobie. “He’s a young guy but fortunately got some good experience last year in the rotation. I think he’s capable of it and adversity, with most people on this planet, raises their character and work ethic.”

The Bisons (2-2) wrap up their two-game Alberta roadtrip Saturday night in Edmonton against the Alberta Golden Bears (1-3).
