WINNIPEG – Assiniboine Park Zoo will become home to two more orphaned polar bear cubs from northern Manitoba.
Manitoba Conservation rescued the cubs from an area along the Hudson Bay coast near York Factory on Sept. 24, the province said in a news release.
The pair are about 10 months old and were spotted by helicopter in the Kaskatamagan Wildlife Management Area, not far from a well-known denning area, the news release said.
An extensive search failed to locate their mother.
“Without the protection of their mother, the cubs would almost certainly not survive,” the news release said.
The bears will be moved to the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at the zoo in Winnipeg after a medical exam.
Once in Winnipeg, the cubs will go through a 30-day quarantine during which they will be kept isolated from the public and media.
