Huskies, Rams renew provincial university football rivalry

Watch above: Huskies, Rams set to clash in provincial university football rivalry

SASKATOON – Huskies. Rams. It’s a provincial university football rivalry that will take place just once in 2014.

The Saskatchewan Huskies are 2-1 while the Regina Rams are 1-2. To add intrigue to this week four match up, it’s the final time retiring Rams head coach Frank McCrystal will be on the sidelines for this battle.

“I don’t imagine they will say anything about it but I know it’s in the back of their mind,” Huskies head coach Brian Towriss says of McCrystal’s players.

“Since they came into the league these games have always taken on a little bit of a different feel. They like to beat us. It doesn’t happen often and we have to make sure it doesn’t happen this time.”

On the field, the Huskies and Rams have two of the most prolific offences in the Canada West.

The Rams like to throw, averaging over 400 yards passing game, which means the Huskies secondary will be put to the test Saturday afternoon.

“It will be a big day for our secondary,” says Huskies safety Mark Ingram, who leads the nation with three interceptions.

“We’re hopefully going to get some pressure with our d-line and hopefully he (Rams QB) throws up some balls and we make plays of them.”

The Rams feature star receivers like Addison Richards and Jared Janotta.

Who is throwing the ball to those receivers is still a question mark. Cayman Shutter was injured early last week in Edmonton. His replacement, Noah Picton, threw for over 400 yards in relief.

“If he gets time, he’s going to put the ball on somebody, we know that,” Towriss said of Picton.

“He showed against Alberta that if he has time to throw he’s going to be pretty accurate and they’ve got great receivers. We got to pressure him and confuse him a little bit.”

Saturday afternoon at Mosaic should produce plenty of fireworks.

If the Huskies win, they will remain in second place in the Canada West, regardless of what happens in Calgary between the Dinos and Manitoba Bisons.
