RED DEER – A shooting at a Red Deer strip club sent a bouncer to a hospital after a man who was kicked out of the bar returned with a gun and fired shots through a closed door, RCMP say.

A bystander was also grazed by a bullet in the incident at the Gent’s Club on 50th Avenue in Red Deer.

Bar owner Kildy Li said a couple from Sylvan Lake were kicked out shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday.

The man, 26, and his 18-year-old girlfriend left the bar, but police and Li said the man returned with a gun.

“They insulted one of the barmaids and the barmaid just asked the doorman to please escort them out,” said Li.

“And then they got mad, came back and fired the shots through the (closed) door.”

A bouncer was struck.

“The bullet ricocheted from the door handle to his hand and to his stomach,” said Li.

The security guard’s injuries are not life-threatening.

The bystander suffered “a little scratch,” said Li.

“We had two off-duty Calgary policemen here. They were very good help,” said Li.

The man and woman fled before police arrived but they were located later in the day at a residence in Sylvan Lake.

“It absolutely could have been a whole lot worse. It’s extremely frightening and very disturbing behaviour,” said Red Deer City RCMP Cpl. Kathe Deheer.

The bouncer is still in hospital. The bystander refused medical help at the club.

The couple have been arrested and charges are pending, RCMP said.

Li said he did not recognize the pair and the whole incident is unheard of in Red Deer.

“In my 30 years in the business, I’ve never seen this before,” Li said.
