Moose Jaw Warriors home opener in new arena

Spirits are running high in Moose Jaw now that the Warriors will open up the regular WHL season in the brand new Mosaic Place.

The town has had two referendums, gone through two years of construction and spent $60-million for the new arena.

General Manager Scott Clark expects the facility to become the social mecca of the town.

It’s show time here in Moose Jaw and Moose Jaw hasn’t really had the type of facility to have that type of entertainment before but tonight we kick it off and it should be very exciting nights here in Moose Jaw at the Mosaic Place.”

Fans snapped up all 4500 tickets for the home opener, including fan Denis Weier who cut his holiday short from the cabin to be here.

“I’ve been a season ticket holder since day one,” he said.

That’s 26 years of cheering on the home team, but Weiers thinks it is time for a change with the new arena.

The only expectation he has is for the team to win.

But fifty years is a lot of history at the crushed can and some people worry the atmosphere just won’t be the same.

“The first exhibition game I was at was a little bit quieter than the civic centre so we’ll see,” remembers Patti Peesker.

“The old one you can hear cheering a bit little more but hopefully the fans are excited and there will be a lot of cheering,” said Jennifer Pratt.

And a lot of cheering is what Warriors Left Winger Markus McCrea is expecting.

“When the coach yells down the ice you can barely hear him. so it’s pretty loud. I think (Thursday night) is going to be really loud for everyone,” McCrea said.

A new wave of sports and recreation begins with the opening of Mosaic Place but plans on what to do with the old civic centre are still on the table.
