Frustration mounting for Saskatoon Transit users

Watch above: Transit riders worry as lockout looms

SASKATOON – While the city and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 615 (ATU 615) work on agreeing on a new contract, frustration is mounting for transit users, not knowing if they will have a way to get around the city come Saturday at 9:01 p.m.

If third year engineering wasn’t challenging enough, the potential of a transit lockout has given Luke Protz additional stress.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Unfortunately, I’m going to have to rely on friends because a few friends have parking passes, so I’ll have to car pool with them but I don’t really want to be a drag,” Protz,.

He’s not alone. Students and non-students who rely on the service to get to class and work are irritated.

Both school divisions say there is nothing they can do and are encouraging parents and students to come up with a plan.

On Thursday afternoon, the city served ATU 615 with a lockout notice. The city and union were back at the bargaining table Friday morning.

If an agreement can’t be reached by 9 p.m. Saturday, a lockout will be in effect. However, Access Transit will continue to operate.
