TORONTO – Ontario’s 2014 tornado season has surged past its average of 12 tornadoes reported a year: On Friday, Environment Canada confirmed the province’s 18th tornado of the season, which normally runs from late April to early October.
September 5 was a particularly damaging day in Southern Ontario, with one tornado touching down in Ramara Township at 6:45 p.m. and another in Beausoleil First Nation around 2 p.m. the same day.

A downburst – which has powerful winds – also produced damage in Orillia and was responsible for the death of a 51-year-old man.

Both tornadoes that day – numbers 17 and 18 of the season – were EF0s on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with winds of around 90 km/h.
