TORONTO – If you live in southern and eastern Ontario, you may want to cover up your plants tonight: there’s the chance of frost.
Environment Canada issued a frost advisory for parts of southern Ontario Thursday, including Newmarket, Caledon, Uxbridge, Barrie and Orillia. Ottawa is also facing frost, though Toronto is not.
Typically frost occurs on cool, clear, calm nights. Instead of the temperature at the ground remaining uniform, radiant heat from the ground rises into the upper layers of the atmosphere.
The lack of wind creates something called an inversion where, instead of the temperature decreasing with height, cooler air remains at ground-level and warmer air is above.
If you cover your plants, you may be able to give a few degrees of extra warmth. Cover them after the winds die down and be sure to remove them before the sun hits them.
