Hurricane Polo moves up Mexican coast, threatens Baja California

TORONTO – Baja California may be feeling the effects of yet another hurricane this week.

Hurricane Polo was upgraded from a tropical storm Wednesday, just days after strong winds and rains battered the Baja California peninsula.

According to Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, 300 Canadians were affected by Hurricane Odile.

On Thursday afternoon, Hurricane Polo was roughly 230 km southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, moving northwest at 13 km/h. The storm’s maximum sustained winds were 120 km/h making it a Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Some areas on the peninsula are under a tropical storm warning or watch, including Cabo where several Canadians were forced to evacuate after Hurricane Odile struck on Sunday.

Though Polo is expected to continue moving northwestward – away from making direct landfall –  the National Hurricane Center is warning that any deviation from that track that takes it slightly north would result in stronger winds along the coast of the peninsula.

Polo is expected to weaken within the next 24 hours.
