Typhoon Kalmaegi batters Philippines, heading toward China

TORONTO – After lashing the Philippines, Typhoon Kalmaegi is heading to mainland China.

On Sunday, Kalmaegi passed over Luzon, Philippines. Late Saturday, a stalled ferry sank off the coast of the Philippines, believed to be a result of enhanced monsoon winds.

As of late Monday night local time, the typhoon was approaching mainland China. In the country’s southern island of Hainan, 26,000 fishing vessels returned to harbour as the massive storm approached.

Schools and government offices will be closed on Tuesday in Haikou, the provincial capital of Hainan.

Kalmaegi’s maximum sustained winds are 157 km/h with higher gusts. The storm is moving west-northwestward at 31 km/h.

Waves of four to six metres are expected west of Guangdong province, and east Hainan.
