PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. – The second of NewPage’s two paper machines is expected to be idled today at the Point Tupper mill.

The mill’s indefinite closure leaves an uncertain future for 600 mill employees, an additional 400 who work in the woodlands and countless others who work in spinoff jobs.

Liberal Michel Samson represents the area in the legislature and says it’s been a time of anxiety for everyone.

NewPage is blaming high power costs, a strong Canadian dollar and rising shipping costs for the shutdown.

A skeleton crew of about two dozen will remain on the job to maintain the machines in case of a restart.

The union representing mill workers says it’s been told three parties are seriously looking at buying the mill.
